8 arrested in slaying of Russian councilman

MOSCOW (AP) ? Zooming around in a Rolls Royce and boasting of ties to Chechnya's strongman ruler, Mikhail Pakhomov didn't live the life of the average provincial Russian lawmaker. He didn't die the death of one either.

Pakhomov, 37, a councilman from the industrial city of Lipetsk, 350 kilometers (215 miles) south of Moscow, was found beaten to a pulp at the bottom of a barrel of cement Monday after what investigators say was a business deal gone wrong ? and a kidnapping that went even worse.

Evgeny Kharitonov, a former senior official in the Moscow regional government, was arrested at a Moscow airport Monday and charged with organizing Pakhomov's kidnapping over an $80 million debt. A warrant was issued Tuesday for his business partner, Sergei Krasovsky. Four other men are charged with the murder-kidnapping, and another three with a related theft.

The case has gathered wide public attention. Some Russians have referred to it as a "postcard from the 1990s," when business, political and criminal interests mixed together and often exploded into violence.

The son of a well-known Lipetsk theatrical couple, Pakhomov ran Liter, a construction and transport company. A former Lipetsk police official was quoted by local media as saying he had been arrested for robbing a shop with a well-known mafia gang in 1995 and on suspicion of kidnapping in 2010, but never charged. After a failed attempt in 2011 to win election to Russia's parliament as a candidate of the Kremlin-backed United Russia, he became a city councilman last October.

Despite his modest public salary, Pakhomov lived an extravagant lifestyle. He cruised around in his Rolls Royce, boasted of connections to Chechnya's strongman leader Ramzan Kadyrov, and surrounded himself with women, the newspaper Kommersant reported.

Police accused Kharitonov and Krasovsky of turning to unemployed men from the Moscow region to carry out the kidnapping. Several failed attempts to kidnap him were made last year. Finally, last week, he was bundled into a car as he left a restaurant outside Lipetsk.

When Pakhomov resisted, the men hit his head against the car door so hard that he eventually bled to death, local media reported, citing police. Police said they determined the kidnapped man was Pakhomov after they found his jeans, phone, and shoes in the street outside the restaurant.

When they arrived in Moscow, police said, the kidnappers refused to go back to Lipetsk to steal documents from Pakhomov's car, a task they had forgotten to carry out in the heat of the moment. Kharitonov and Krasovsky then paid three other men 60,000 rubles (about $2,000) to go back and get them, according to local media, citing police.

But while driving back to Moscow, investigators said, the men were pulled over for speeding by traffic police, who found Pakhomov's passport in their car. The men then led police to the other suspects.

Although police did not specify where the alleged $80 million debt came from, local media pointed to contracts Liter had with the two men charged with organizing his kidnapping. Krasovsky is the former head of a special economic zone in Lipetsk which contracted Liter to provide infrastructure. Liter went bankrupt last year after another economic zone in Siberia sued it for not fulfilling its obligations.

Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said that one of the detained suspects told police that Kharitonov said that he had to recover the debt to advance his career.

"For Kharitonov, the career was the main priority," Markin said.

Blizzcon 2013 announced for October 8-9, 2013

Posted 19 February 2013 by Flux

Blizzcon 2013 announced today. The semi-annual event is coming on November 8-9, 2013. That?s a few weeks later than the usual October time frame, but perhaps the later season will work some magic on the usually too-hot SoCal weather and attendees can do a bit less sweating than usual while waiting in the endless line at 9:50am before the doors open. Here?s the quote, with no real specifics yet, beyond the date:

IRVINE, Calif. ? February 19, 2013 ? Gather your guildmates, muster your minions, and summon your swarm! Blizzard Entertainment today announced plans for its seventh BlizzCon? gaming convention, taking place Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. For two epic days, members of Blizzard?s gaming community from around the globe will descend on Anaheim to meet, play, and celebrate their shared passion for all things Warcraft?, StarCraft?, and Diablo?.

?BlizzCon gives us a chance to connect with our players and share our latest projects in a very personal way,? said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. ?Members from all of our gaming communities have helped make this event bigger and better every time, and we look forward to meeting up and celebrating with them in November.?

In addition to serving as a gathering place for Blizzard Entertainment gaming communities, BlizzCon will offer attendees a chance to enjoy:

  • Hands-on play time with the latest versions of Blizzard Entertainment games
  • Global finals for Blizzard eSports, featuring top pro gamers from around the world
  • In-depth discussion panels with Blizzard game developers and artists
  • Competitive and casual tournaments for players to showcase their talents
  • Community contests with great prizes
  • Commemorative merchandise based on Blizzard Entertainment?s game universes
  • More activities and attractions to be announced.

  • Nothing yet about what they?ll be showing at the show. I?m personally expecting D3X to be a major feature at the show, whether it debuts there or earlier in the year, with a playable demo and lots of other fun new stuff. I suppose there will be some WoW or secret project stuff there as well, but Blizzard?s non-Diablo projects are pretty much meh to me. Your anticipation may vary, naturally.

Little audience for 'Zero Dark Thirty' in Pakistan

(AP) ? Pakistan stars in "Zero Dark Thirty," from early scenes at a detention site to the dramatic closing minutes as Navy SEALs assault the hideout of Osama bin Laden. But the Academy Award-nominated film about hunt for the al-Qaida leader has sparked a controversy here about its portrayal of the country, and it will likely not be shown on the local big screen anytime soon.

Partly, the film taps into national discomfort that bin Laden was found to be living for years near Pakistan's equivalent of West Point, and anger over the U.S. decision to enter its airspace and raid the compound without giving advance notice. Doubts about whether bin Laden was really hiding out for years in the city of Abbottabad are also common across Pakistan, a country where conspiracy theories often have more weight than fact.

But Pakistanis who have seen the film on DVD or Internet downloads are also making much of what they say are factual errors.

Nadeem F. Paracha, a columnist for the English language newspaper Dawn and a cultural critic in Pakistan, noted that in some scenes characters speak Arabic, whereas Pakistanis in fact speak Urdu or Pashto or one of the tens of other languages found here.

In other scenes protesters get right up to the U.S. Embassy gates when in reality the embassy is situated in an enclosed diplomatic enclave that demonstrators can't access. Some scenes that were supposed to show the frontier city of Peshawar looked more like 19th century Delhi in India.

"How can you make a Hollywood blockbuster, put in so much money and get simple things wrong?" Paracha asked. "Instead of the film being taken seriously, it became a joke among Pakistanis."

The movie traces the arc of the CIA's decade-long hunt for bin Laden through the eyes of a young female analyst, who spends most of her time ostensibly in Pakistan. Screenwriter Mark Boal visited Pakistan to do research, but the movie scenes were not shot here.

One scene that also raises questions shows a vaccination worker going to the compound door as part of the American plan to get DNA samples from the bin Laden family. The U.S. did in fact run a fake hepatitis campaign, but in the movie it's portrayed as an attempt to vaccinate against polio. This could add suspicion to polio workers already facing attacks by militants in the tribal agencies.

Pakistan has only a few movie theaters that show English-language films, and none so far has aired "Zero Dark Thirty." All films shown at cinemas must be approved by a board of censors, and the head of the censor board, Dr. Raja Mustafa Hyder, said no distributor has applied for permission to show the film.

Whether or not it would actually make it past the censor board is another question, considering that a representative of the powerful Pakistani military sits on the board.

After it came out that bin Laden had been living in Abbottabad and that the military failed to detect the American raiding party coming to get him, the once-revered Pakistan army found itself on the defensive. The film also highlights the cooperation between the C.I.A. and Pakistan's intelligence agency during the early years after the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the United States, a potentially embarrassing topic in a country with such vehement anti-American sentiment.

Jamshed Zafar, one of the leading importers and distributors of foreign films in Pakistan, said he decided after discussions with friends that it wasn't worth importing "Zero Dark Thirty."

"If you get into such controversy, you not only lose money but your reputation is also at stake," he said.

Any distributor or movie house that showed the movie might also be courting trouble with the public. Last year during demonstrations against an anti-Islam film crowds of right-wing Islamic hardliners burned some movie houses.

The fact that neighboring India ? Pakistan's archenemy ? substituted for many of the Pakistani street scenes has also raised concerns, said Rashid Khawaja, a Lahore-based film producer and distributor.

Until recently it was possible to purchase a DVD of the film in Islamabad. But at least two stores in the capital said in recent days that they stopped selling it because of rumors it had been banned. Another store was still selling the movie ? albeit under the counter.

In Abbottabad, the DVD is available at local video stores but hasn't sold particularly well.

"This movie is about Osama and Abbottabad, and still I honestly say people living here are not showing much interest in it," said Akhtar Hussain.

Even in the city where people could hear the Navy SEALs as they swooped in on helicopters and flew away with bin Laden's body, there's still disbelief he was living so close.

College student Raheel Ahmed said he watched "Zero Dark Thirty" and came away thinking the movie's intent was to praise President Barack Obama.

"I don't know whether Osama was here," he said, "but Americans have defamed us by producing the movie."

    Downton Abbey, Season 3

Hugh Bonneville as Lord Grantham and Dan Stevens as Matthew Crawley. Lord Grantham and Matthew Crawley.

Photograph courtesy of ? Giles Keyte/Carnival Film & Television Limited 2012 for MASTERPIECE

So, farewell then, Matthew Crawley. You were a curious British analog to America?s Magical Negro: the Magical Middle-Class Chap.

In Season 1, you saved Downton Abbey for the Crawley family by having the good sense to steer clear of the Titanic. When you emerged from your humble Mancunian roots, you found love?and a future earlship?on the other side of the Pennines.

In Season 2, you saved Europe from the Hun by fighting in some pathetically unconvincing trenches. Then you saved Lady Mary?s honor by exercising more forgiveness for her dalliance with the Turkish gentleman than any true toff could?ve managed.

In the just-completed season, you saved Downton from Lord Grantham?s bone-headed investment schemes by having the dumb luck to inherit yet another random fortune. (Even you couldn?t save the Swireses.) You saved it again by applying your bourgeois practicality to reform the aristocratic mismanagement of the Downton estate. And then you saved it one last time by fathering a son and heir who will remove the specter of that damned entail once and for all.

No wonder you were too spent to save yourself from that oncoming vehicle!

Indeed, you were such a reliable savior, it?s hard to imagine how Downton Abbey can survive without you. A family that was already reeling from the loss of its kind-hearted rebel is now also robbed of its conscience. And we viewers are left without the character who was most like us: an outsider overwhelmed by Downton?s sweeping scale, reluctantly charmed by its residents, but ultimately pessimistic that this strange anachronism can go on forever.

Julian Fellowes has said that Season 4 will begin six months after your death and will be about ?the rebuilding of Mary.? It will surely be a gloomy world of grief and mourning clothes. Downton Abbey has always been low on men, especially upstairs, and with you gone, the show?s Yorkshire village might as well twin with Northampton, Mass.

Matthew Crawley, Esq., you didn?t live long enough to become the 8th Earl of Grantham, but you?ll always be the middle-class earl of our hearts. You spent too much time astride your high horse this season, preaching about the rights and wrongs of accepting inheritances and running estates, but as Seth Stevenson put it, ?no scene was entirely hopeless? when you were in it. As I face the long wait for Season 4, I?ll miss the show and this TV Club, but I?ll especially miss you, dear magical Matthew.
