Popular RSS app Reeder to get non-Google Reader sync options, iPad and Mac versions free until they do

Reeder, one of the best RSS apps for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, has posted a short update on their future. The reason they felt it necessary, of course, is the shuttering of Google Reader, which many RSS apps, including Reeder, used as a backend. Here's the important part, from Reeder's website:

Development of Reeder will continue after July 1st.

Silvio Rizzi, the talented developer behind the popular app, also talks about adding other sync services and options to the iPhone version of Reeder in 2.1, moving those over to the iPad and Mac versions, and, interestingly, making the iPad and Mac versions free until those features arrive in 2.0.

How a neurotransmitter acts to coordinate a compound movement through two different receptors in C. elegans

Apr. 2, 2013 ? New research by scientists at the University of Massachusetts Medical School shows at the single cell level how an external stimulus sets off a molecular chain reaction in the transparent roundworm C. elegans, a process in which a single neurotransmitter coordinates and times two separate actions. These findings shed new light on how neurons translate sensory input into actions and may one day pave the way to understanding how misfiring neurons contribute to motor symptoms in neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease.

Details of the study were published online by PLOS Biology.

"We've known the broad outline of how a behavior circuit works-a stimulus starts a neuronal cascade, which ultimately activates a muscle cell-for decades," said Mark Alkema, PhD, assistant professor of neurobiology. "The details about how this process works, however, such as which neurotransmitters act through which receptors in which neurons have remained a mystery for even the simplest of behaviors.

"This research provides an answer to the simple question of how the worm turns around and the broader question of how a behavioral sequence is produced on a sub-cellular level. In time, understanding voluntary movement in humans will require answering the same questions about the timing and location of neurons and neurotransmitters-only in the infinitely more complex variety of circuits in the human nervous system," said Dr. Alkema.

Roundworms move by alternately relaxing and contracting ventral and dorsal muscles along both sides of its body. As the animal moves forward, it uses its head to probe for possible threats. A gentle touch to the head of the worm initiates an escape response resulting in the animal ceasing head movements and quickly moving backwards. This initial reaction is closely followed by a deep ventral turn allowing it to move away in the opposite direction.

Earlier studies have shown that tyramine, a monoamine neurotransmitter akin to noradrenaline in humans, is involved in the C. elegans escape response. Specifically, C. elegans have a pair of tyraminergic motor neurons that are essential for coordinating the initial suppression of head movement and the backing response. These neurons release tyramine, which works through a fast-acting ion channel called LGC-55 to inhibit forward movement and relax the neck muscles. How the animal coordinates this movement with the subsequent deep turn that allows it to complete the change in direction and move away from the threat, however, was unknown. In this study, the authors provide evidence that links this initial phase of the escape response to the later stages in which the worm makes a sharp turn and navigates away from the danger.

When C. elegans are placed on a surface containing a high concentration of tyramine they become immobilized. Alkema and colleagues found that this paralysis could be overcome by mutating the C. elegans gene responsible for encoding the G-protein coupled receptor SER-2. Additionally, they found that the SER-2 receptor was active in a set of 13 neurons residing along the ventral nerve cord. The synapses of these neurons were connected to corresponding ventral muscles cells along one side of the worm's body.

Further experiments revealed that the same monoamine neurotransmitter-tyramine-responsible for the initial phase of the escape response was also responsible for activating the slow-acting G-protein coupled receptor SER-2. Activation of this receptor inhibited release of the neurotransmitter GABA and facilitated contraction of the ventral muscles, allowing the animal to complete its turn and resume movement in the opposite direction.

"This study shows how tyramine works through separate receptors to produce a complex behavior requiring the temporal coordination of independent motor programs," said Alkema. "Acting through the fast-acting ionotropic receptor LGC-55, the animal completes the initial movement by ceasing head movement and backing away. At the same time, the slow-acting SER-2 receptor is also being activated by tyramine to complete the turn and facilitate movement in the opposite direction.

"It is the different receptors that allow for the coordination of these actions by the same neurotransmitter," said Alkema. "This indicates that tyramine, much like adrenergic signaling in mammals, coordinates different aspects of the flight response. It's possible that temporally coordinated activation of ionotropic and metabotropic receptors may be a common signaling motif employed across organisms to orchestrate behavioral responses and is something we will be pursing further."

IAG in talks with Airbus on A350 order for British Airways: WSJ

(Reuters) - Airline holding company International Airlines Group could order Airbus' new A350 long-range aircraft for its British Airways arm as soon as this week, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

The exact number of planes to be ordered and the potential value of the contract were still under discussion with the talks mainly centered on the A350-1000, the largest aircraft in the A350 range, the WSJ said on its website citing two people familiar with the talks.

The financial daily cited one of the people as saying the order could also include the smaller A350-900.

If a deal is agreed, it would be a win for EADS-owned Airbus over rival Boeing Co which is trying to sell British Airways the next version of its popular 777 wide-body jet, the paper reported.

However, the Journal said British Airways, which already has a large fleet of Boeing 777s, could still order the revamped 777X.

British Airways mainly operates Boeing aircraft on long-haul routes with its current Airbus planes, mainly from the A320 family, used on shorter runs, according to the airline's website.

However, the company also has 12 Airbus A380 super-jumbos on order, its website shows.

Airbus was not immediately available for comment. An IAG spokeswoman declined to comment.

Meghan McCain's new reality show will be cross between 'Jackass' and 'Meet the Press'

Meghan McCain is joining the ranks of reality TV stars. The daughter of Arizona senator John McCain will star in and executive-produce 'Raising McCain,' a new docu-talk series that will be part of the initial programming of the new Pivot cable channel, set to debut on Aug. 1.

"Raising McCain" will follow McCain, 28, as she interviews "experts, regular people and members of her generation, exploring the most important and unusual questions of the day, framed by Meghan's experiences in her personal life." The network will air 10 half-hour episodes of the show, which McCain recently described? as "?Meet the Press? meets 'Jackass.'"

?I grew up around journalists, and I came to realize that the best, most valuable moments happened in the green room before the interview and during the shots of whiskey afterwards," McCain said Wednesday at an event to promote the new Pivot network.

The political website The Daily Caller caused a ruckus after it posted an article about the show, along with a cartoon that featured McCain's breasts discussing her new program. McCain voiced her outrage for the cartoon on her Twitter account yesterday. She called out the website for its "offensive" and "sexist" article, and vowed to address these very issues on her upcoming talk show.

The Pivot network will reportedly be available as a pay-TV channel, as well as a broadband-only streaming service. In addition to McCain's show, it will feature five other new programs, including one hosted and co-produced by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt. His show, "HitRECord on TV!" is being described by the network as an "open source variety show."

Reward for dead California fugitive policeman shrinks

(Reuters) - A second group has pulled its money from a pooled $1.2 million reward offered during a manhunt for a renegade former California policeman who died in a fiery standoff, a Los Angeles television station said.

The Peace Officers Research Association of California withdrew the $50,000 it pledged for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Christopher Dorner, KNBC said.

An official for the association, which represents 64,000 police union members, told the television station on Friday that the conditions for the reward had not been met because Dorner was not arrested.

On Monday, the city of Riverside, California, pulled its $100,000 contribution to the reward pool for similar reasons. It said its offer was contingent on Dorner's capture.

Dorner had been fired from the Los Angeles Police Department and was accused of killing four people in a vendetta against police. He shot and killed himself in a burning cabin in the mountains above Los Angeles during a standoff with police on February 12.

Dozens of groups and municipalities pledged money for the reward during the intense nine-day manhunt, and a payout announcement is expected in mid-April.

At least three people have submitted claims for the reward. Karen and Jim Reynolds called police after Dorner tied them up in their Big Bear Lake condominium and fled in their SUV shortly before his death.

Dorner crashed their SUV and carjacked a pickup truck from another man, Rick Heltebrake, who also called authorities, and has submitted a reward claim.
